Spring Sports Preview

FEB. 17 -- With the Spring 2019 season already underway for most sports, we asked our Varsity coaches for a short preview of their respective teams this year.

Varsity Baseball - Head Coach Jamey Woods

The Patriot Baseball team begins a new era under Head Coach Jamey Woods. Looking to get the program back on track after a disappointing 2018 campaign, the Patriots are led by seniors James Addaman and Mikey Nardella, juniors Reed Rothermel, Davis Thomason, and Justin Bartlett, and sophomores Jack Godsey and Sam Love. The team is off to a great start with a come from behind victory over 5-A Chamblee High School last week, highlighted by a game-clinching 3-run homerun by Thomason during the late-inning comeback. Coach Woods  quick turnaround and the expectations are nothing short of a state playoff birth this year.

JV Boys Golf - Head Coach Matt Petersen

Boys Golf will only be fielding a JV team this year led by seniors Matthew McGaughey and Matthew McKinnon. Other players include sophomore Cole Rogers, freshman Finn Howard, and 8th graders Jack Adelman and Dalton Burts.

Varsity Girls Golf - Head Coach Joan Delk

Varsity Girls Golf is entering its 9th season this year. Seniors McKinsey Wallis and Olivia Love will lead the Varsity squad on their quest to make the team's 7th appearance in the State Championship in 9 years. Varsity Girls Golf Coach Joan Delk says their 2019 team motto is "Empty Your Tank". We want the girls to give it their ALL everyday at practice and during each tournament.

Varsity Boys Lacrosse - Head Coach Connor Breslin

Boys Lacrosse is poised to have a great year under the leadership of our six seniors. We have some players in new starting roles and we are excited to see them have a breakout season. In addition, junior Bryce Ferraro, junior Greyson Stevens, and senior Bowen Harris - all leading scorers last year - return to lead the charge. Our biggest area contests this year will be against Holy Innocents', Fellowship, Mount Vernon, King's Ridge, and Blessed Trinity.

Varsity Girls Lacrosse - Head Coach Julie Crawford

The Girls Lacrosse program is proud to have its inaugural season as a Varsity program. Stacked with talent and potential, the team has a goal of making the playoffs and honing their skills to be as competitive as possible. Led by captains Kenlie Canada, Morgan Boylan, and Helen Harris, the Lady Patriots have been working hard at practice on implementing a new defense and moving the ball down the field. We are looking forward to a great season.

Varsity Boys Soccer - Head Coach Brad Smith

The 2019 Varsity Boys Soccer team is off to a great start going 2-0 so far. This year's team will by led by seniors Chase Grande, Kenneth Terry, and Chris Hou with the defense anchored by juniors Payton Broaddus and Alec Reynolds and aggressive attack led by Chase Grande and freshman Mike Chesbrough. The GHSA rules changed a little this year, so that we play each region opponent twice (playing home and away). The team is excited about this change.

Varsity Girls Soccer - Head Coach Melanie Murphy

The Varsity Girls Soccer team is off to a great 2-0 start as well. Though the team lost 9 seniors last year, it has gained some talented freshmen this year and is hopeful for a successful season. We have some crucial returning players that will lead the team including junior Kylie Prinzo anchoring our defense with freshman Grace Alexander, senior Stella Weintraub holding our midfield strong and playing a crucial role in our offense, and senior goalkeeper Taylor Bater returning for her 4th year in that position. Overall, we look forward to a successful year ahead with hopes of making it back to the State Playoffs. We have high goals this year, but plan to work hard to accomplish them.

Varsity Tennis - Head Coach Grant Norwood

The Boys and Girls Tennis teams will serve up their start to the season on Feb. 20 at Wesleyan.  Both teams are young, but they are expected to compete for a region title. The boys will be lead by their top returning players - seniors Owen Kern and Matthew McKinnon, juniors Noah Haverdink and Lukas Shibley, and sophomore Will Gansereit. The girls team will be led by juniors Izzy Delaney and Jordana Jimenez. The lineup is expected to be strong throughout boosted by six sophomores and three freshmen. Regarding strength, the team has added a strength & conditioning program under the guidance of Director or Sports Performance, Richard Hendricks. Power, strength, grit, and competitiveness will define the 2019 teams.

Varsity Track and Field - Head Coach Emily Payne

The 2019 Track team is a growing program this year with a lot of potential and energized young athletes. Senior Jakob Wooten returns to lead the team after a strong junior season and top placements at State. The addition of Coach Ardin Tucker will be a huge asset to the team this year, allowing for the addition of Pole Vault as a competitive event. We are looking forward to our first meet next Wednesday, Feb. 20 and continuing to work hard for a successful season!
