AUG. 18 -- Football season returned Friday night as the Mount Pisgah Patriots took on the Holy Innocents' Episcopal School Golden Bears at the PAC in the first game of the regular season. The Patriots, however, struggled to match a Holy Innocents' team that was strong on both sides of the ball.
The Bears took a 14-0 lead early in the 1st quarter after scoring two touchdowns on the Patriots within the first seven minutes of play. The Patriots reponded later in the quarter when senior RB Chase Grande returned a punt 75 yards for the first Patriot touchdown of the night.
In the second quarter, the Patriots held the Bears scoreless on several drives and then evened the score at 14-14 after a 15-yard pass from senior QB Connor Norwood to junior Greyson Stevens for a touchdown. However, Holy Innocents' broke through the Patriots' defense in the next series and responded with a touchdown of their own to go up 21-14 at the half.
Throughout the third quarter, both teams held each other scoreless. Early in the 4th quarter, the Bears scored another touchdown to increase the lead to 27-14 after the Patriots blocked the extra point kick. Still fighting to catch up, the Patriots advanced down the field on the next drive and scored on a 7-yard pass again from Norwood to Stevens to trail 27-21. But despite a strong effort, the Patriot defense flagged allowing Holy Innocents' to score two more touchdowns, one with a 2-point conversion, before ending the game. The final score was Holy Innocents' 42, Patriots 21.
For the night, Norwood completed 17 of 29 passes for 213 yard and 2 TDs as well as 4 carries for 54 yards.
The Patriots will travel to Mount Vernon next Friday, August 24 to play in another non-region game. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m.
