SEPT. 21 -- The Mount Pisgah Varsity Football team gained its seventh-straight win over the King's Ridge Tigers Friday night with a 21-17 victory, but the outcome was far from certain.
The Patriots opened the scoring on the first drive of the night with a 48-yard run by junior Will Pascucci and a good extra point by junior kicker Payton Broaddus to go up 7-0 over King's Ridge. However, the Tiger offense came together and took a 14-7 lead by halftime, scoring two touchdowns on short runs after advancing down the field against a sluggish Patriot defense. A series of turnovers and penalties dogged the Patriots throughout the game, including three onside kicks recovered by the Tigers.
On the first drive of the second half, the King's Ridge offense once again advanced into the red zone, but this time the Patriot defense held the Tigers scoreless after forcing a turnover on downs at the 7 yard line. Later in the 3rd, the Patriots tied the game at 14-14 on a 37-yard pass from senior QB Connor Norwood to receiver Chase Grande. Before the quarter ended though, the Tigers advanced down the field and kicked a field goal to maintain a 17-14 lead.
Midway through the 4th quarter, Norwood connected with receiver Nick Speros on a 35-yard pass and then kept the ball on a 3-yard run on the next play for a Patriot touchdown to go up 21-17. The Tigers advanced inside the red zone again with under two minutes remaining, but the Patriot defense forced a turnover on downs to secure the win.
The Patriots are now 2-3 overall for the season and 2-1 in Region 6-A. The team will travel to Mount Paran (2-2) next Friday, September 28, to continue region play.
