MAR. 23 -- The Mount Pisgah Varsity Tennis teams have started the season in style. Coming off 5-0 and 4-1 wins for the the boys and girls respectively against St. Francis on March 27, the teams have advanced to 5-0 in sub-region play and have clinched the #1 seed in the region. The girls team fought hard for 3-2 wins against Pinecrest, Whitefield, and Fellowship to reach this point. The boys team dominated its opponents by going 25-0 overall in matches in its division.
The Varsity Girls team, with 4 freshman starters, looks to fight for state playoff contention for the first time in several years. Led by senior captain Lauren Bartlett, they display the energy, passion, and skill it takes to win. On the other hand, the Varsity Boys are led by the experience of 3 senior starters and look to build upon their state playoff appearances the last 2 years where they finished 4th in the region and had close first-round exits. A first-round exit is not the conversation being had by the players this year as senior Rhett Hilburn expressed, "this is our year to make a deep state playoff run!"
Coach Anderson has expressed how special these teams are this year by saying, "the camaraderie and fellowship this team displays is something I haven't seen in the tennis program in years past. No matter the score, weather, or time, I see the majority of our players and families sticking around and cheering the team on until the last point has been played. I've had other coaches ask me if I make the players stay at home and away matches until everyone is done and it's a great feeling to be able to say no, it's what they want to do and how much they care about each other. I am looking forward to seeing how the rest of the season plays out and know that we are setting the foundation of this program to continue to grow and develop for many years to come."
The Patriots will know their state playoff status after the region tournament on 4/16. Follow @MPCS_Tennis on Twitter to stay up-to-date with the Mount Pisgah Varsity Tennis teams.
