Varsity Girls Basketball Wraps Up Season in Region Tournament

Varsity Girls Basketball Wraps Up Season in Region Tournament
Feb. 7 -- The Varsity Girls Basketball team concluded its season last night with a loss to Mount Paran in Round 2 of the Region Tournament. The girls' overall record stands at 10-16 overall and 7-8 in the region.

Head Coach Regina Tate-Leslie had the following to say about the team's season:

"The Varsity Girls Basketball team had a theme for our season: "Pursuing Excellence". We wanted to Pursue Excellence in everything we did both on and off the court. The girls wanted to represent themselves and our community. We also defined it by hard work, character, passion, loyalty, a team-first mentality, basketball-specific toughness, positivity, competing, and having fun.

From the first game against Tallulah Falls to our last game against Mount Paran, we showed great improvement on the court. We were a team characterized by a fierce defensive mentality. Megan Childress, as a freshman, led us in this mentality. She led the team in deflections and steals statistically. Sofia Cendoya, although small in stature sacrificed her body each night to box out players much bigger than her. Sofia loves to be physical and we needed this mentality in order to compete. Annabelle Geier joined the team late, but added senior leadership and energy on both defense and offense.

Our offense took some time to develop, but we definitely improved collectively as we began to take our time and embrace the system. Anna Mancil, Grace Santee, Megan Messinger, and Megan Childress were our leading scorers. Anna Mancil had several double-double games from her performance rebounding and scoring.

Our season also was a result of the amazing leadership from our captains Anna Mancil, Jordana Jimenez, and Megan Messinger. They demonstrated that leadership from within a team truly makes a difference.

Team honors included:

We achieved 6 wins in our region during the regular season and improved our record from last season by 4 wins. Overall, the girls and coaching staff are very proud of our achievements this season and are looking to continue to build on this foundation in girls' basketball.
