Varsity Wrestling Qualifies for State Duals Championship

JAN. 14 -- Over the weekend the Varsity Wrestling team competed in the Area Duals at St. Francis High School for a chance to qualify for the State Duals Championships for the first time in school history.

The team had a rough start, losing its first match to Wesleyan 36-42, so the team needed Wesleyan to win out for a chance to still qualify for State Duals. The Patriots then took on St. Francis and won 63-18. The team advanced to the 3rd/4th place match against Mount Vernon and won 61-13. Wesleyan subsequently beat Holy Innocents, which gave the Patriots a chance to challenge Holy Innocents for true second.

In the most exciting Mount Pisgah wrestling match ever, the teams battled each other for over 2 hours, trading win for win. The wrestlers won the last 3 matches of the dual, which included a 4th overtime victory which led the Patriots to a 32-26 victory.

The team finished as Area Runner-ups and travels to Macon on Thursday to compete in the Duals State Championship for the first time in school history. "It was a total team effort," said Head Coach Josh Merry. "Every wrestler was involved in this exciting event of bringing home an Area Runner-Up trophy and a chance to wrestle in the State Duals Championships."
