JAN. 22 - Over the weekend, the Varsity Wrestling Team competed in the GHSA Class A Team Duals Championship for the first time in school history after qualifying as an Area runner-up.
In the round of 16, the team faced off against Chattahoochee County, starting out strong with a 24-0 lead and going on to win 49-30. In the quarters, the team faced off against Turner County. The team had some great individual showings but ultimately came up short in a 41-30 loss, which put it in the consolation bracket to compete for 3rd/4th place.
In the first round of consolations, the team had a solid showing against Landmark Christian, only losing 2 individual matches and winning 56-24. Next the team faced Mt. Zion, which was one of the most exciting duals of the tournament. Both teams battled hard and traded wins back and forth. With only one match left, the Patriots were winning 37-36 and sophomore Happy Chane came through with a big pin to lead the team to victory.
On Saturday morning the Patriots faced Wesleyan in the consolation semifinal -- a rematch from Area Duals where Wesleyan won by 6 points. After a few adjustments and some solid wrestling by each team member, the team came out on top, 40-33. The team advanced to the consolation final where it faced off against Turner County a second time for the 3rd/4th place match-up. Again, the Patriots fought hard but fell to Turner County 42-30.
Overall, the team had a great showing and everyone played a key part in the victories. The Patriots officially finished in 4th place for the tournament. However, the team also ranked 3rd out of all classifications for most team points earned and most pins in the least amount of time, as well as finishing in a 2nd-place tie for the most individual victories during the weekend.
The Varsity Wrestling team will compete at the Darlington Open this Saturday, Jan. 26, before going into the Area Individual Meet the following week.
